Conference: ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND POWER ELECTRONICS

Power electronics and motor drives have gained significant maturity after several decades of dynamic technology evolution. With the maturing trend, there will be tremendous emphasis on power electronics applications in industrial, commercial, residential, transportation, aerospace, military and utility systems. In the 21st. century, we expect to see the major impact of power electronics not only in global industrialization and high efficiency general energy systems, but in energy conservation, renewable energy systems, electric/hybrid vehicles and bulk energy storage systems. With the initiative of modern Smart Grid, there is a trend of merger of power electronics with computers, communication, information technology and power engineering to emerge as a complex interdisciplinary technology. The presentation, in the beginning, will discuss global energy scenario, climate change problems due to fossil fuel burning, and the methods of their mitigation. Then, it will discuss the impact of power electronics in energy saving, renewable energy systems, bulk energy storage and electric/hybrid vehicles. A few example applications will be reviewed before coming to conclusion and future scenario. In the future scenario, the advances and trends of power semiconductor devices, converters, motor drives, control and estimation will be briefly reviewed.

Conference: Energy Systems Real Time Optimization

Some of the challenges that industrial complexes are facing nowadays in terms of energy management are the complexity of the energy systems (fuels, steam, electricity, water and hydrogen) that are to be operated, lack of reliable measurements, coordination difficulties among plant areas, emissions constraints and/or trading, deregulated markets or going to deregulation, fuels prices volatility, the need to adapt the production targets according to demand and aggressive cost reduction policies.
The use of online, real time, energy systems optimizing models to address such a challenges usually result in energy cost savings in the order of 1 to 5%. Such an achievement is based on the daily optimization of the existing assets, providing the process with the requested energy in the cheapest way.
The “real time model” is a detailed energy system model which gets the measurements from a Real Time Database (i.e. Plant Information system), validates them, simulate and optimize the operating conditions, based on a defined set of degrees of freedom and constraints. The results of such an optimization are presented in different ways to Operations personnel (i.e. custom reports and graphical views). Such set of “recommendations” are typically applied on a daily or shift basis.
The Visual MESA software (Energy management system) is widely used at refineries and petrochemical complexes (Refs. 1 to 14). Visual MESA has been adopted by the leading refiners worldwide and is the first choice in the segment of online energy optimization. At the sites where Visual MESA is in use, the operators always have available a set of recommendations to operate the energy system at the minimum cost under the current site production scenario. The model also acts as a “watch dog” since supervisors can evaluate how operators manage the energy system based on the Key Performance Indicators being generated.
The same model used for the online, real time optimization, can also be used in standalone mode, populated either with current or historical data, to perform case studies for planning and engineering or to evaluate alternatives for a better operation of the energy system.
Different aspects of the deployment project and use of on-line energy system optimization models in industrial complexes will be described.
